Important Information about Forclosure

DECATUR – As DeKalb County prepares to launch its Foreclosure Registry, a public information session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.14 at the Decatur Library (215 Sycamore St, Decatur).  The public information session is an opportunity for residents and other interested parties to gain first-hand information and provide feedback about the foreclosure registry and registration process.

The Foreclosure Registry was created through an ordinance voted on by the Board of Commissioners to protect residential neighborhoods from becoming blighted as a result of the lack of adequate maintenance and security of abandoned properties resulting from the foreclosure crisis.

The ordinance requires lenders who foreclose on a property to register the property with the County or face fines.  The registry, which goes into effect on October 25, requires a registration fee of $175, and violators will be fined $1,000 per day, per property.  A provision in the ordinance mandates lenders located outside of DeKalb, Clayton, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale counties to designate a local property agent to manage and maintain the property.
