Emily Sanders, Chairman and CEO of Sanders Financial Management, moderated a panel at the 14th Annual Women’s Leadership Forum, held May 4, 2012, at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. Sanders, consistently ranked one of the top women in wealth management nationwide, led a discussion on “Developing Relationships That Support Entrepreneurial Success.”

The Women’s Leadership Forum is presented by Atlanta Business Chronicle, in partnership with the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University.

Dept. of Labor launches system to improve unemployment insurance

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor recently rolled out a new electronic system designed to increase efficiency and reduce costs of operating the state's unemployment insurance program.

Georgia is one of 10 states to adopt the State Information Data Exchange (SIDES) E-response. It allows employers to respond promptly to the Department of Labor when a former worker files an unemployment claim, according to state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.

"This new online capability is part of our continuing effort to make the Georgia Department of Labor more user-friendly and technologically up-to-date," Butler said in a statement. "This will significantly speed communications between the labor department and employers. At the same time, it will help prevent some overpayments to people who might not be eligible for benefits, saving us from having to go back and try to collect money from ineligible applicants."

DORAVILLE | Leaders hope to redevelop GM plant

ATLANTA -- Several metro Atlanta leaders are meeting with President Barack Obama's so-called "car czar" as they try to move ahead with plans to redevelop an abandoned General Motors plant in Doraville.

Jay Williams, executive director of the Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, is to meet Wednesday afternoon with Doraville and DeKalb County leaders to discuss the plans.

DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan says the county is open to exploring all possibilities for the site, which is still owned by GM.

Silverbacks form partnership with Coca-Cola

ATLANTA -- Two famous Atlanta franchises have finally teamed up, creating a "refreshing" five-year agreement.

The Atlanta Silverbacks announced a partnership with the Coca-Cola Company Wednesday. The Atlanta-based beverage provider will now provide its products at both Atlanta Silverbacks Park in Doraville and the Suwanee Indoor soccer center.

DORAVILLE | High-rise owners at odds over paying light bill to restore power

DORAVILLE, Ga. (WXIA) -- The problems are just beginning for the residents at the high-rise Presidential Condo Hotel in DeKalb County.

Tuesday, Georgia Power cut off electricity to the complex after they say the bill had not been paid. Wednesday, the DeKalb County Fire Marshal deemed the structure unsafe to live in, ordering residents on all 14 floors to move out, without a working elevator.

Many angry residents said they have no place to go, and that they are the ones stuck in the middle of the dispute.

"Now we're stuck trying to get our stuff out, along with trying to get everything packed. The two owners are fighting and we're caught in the middle," said one resident.

DEKALB | 'Undesirable' businesses not welcome in county

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County Commissioner Lee May stood at a busy intersection Friday evening and pointed to what he called undesirable businesses cluttering up, even endangering, the neighborhood.

"You have a liquor store right here, and behind the liquor store you have a grocery store that sells beer and wine.... You have across the street a gas station that sells beer and wine. On the other side of the intersection you have a drug store that sells beer and wine. You have a proliferation of alcohol outlets" at just that one intersection.

And it's a county-wide problem, he said.

This week the county commission approved May's proposal to limit how many additional "undesirable" businesses will be allowed to move into the county, and where they'll be allowed to move in.
