ATHENS, Ga. -- For this week’s installment of Best Spots, we've compiled a list of Neighborhood Thrift Stores for you to purchase some eccentric and timeless pieces.

Minx is a favorite among locals and university students. The shop, which features florescent lights and an adorable resident Corgi named Winston, has an impressive collection of vintage jewelry, boots, shows, coats and furniture. However, shoppers think the best part of the shop is the $1 section in the back and the $5 bin. This is the type of thrift store that makes thrifters happy. The store is located at 166 W. Clayton Street in Athens.

The Classy Finds Consignment store carries everything from formalwear to hardware and tools.

Smoking sections could become slimmer in DeKalb County

DECATUR, Ga. – Are you ready for a smoke-free DeKalb County? If so, you could get your wish. Last month, the DeKalb County Board of Health voted to amend the county’s current Clean Indoor Air Ordinance. If adopted, the suggested revisions would make the county’s businesses, parks and facilities completely smoke-free.

According to the DeKalb County Board of Health, the currently ordinance:

“Allows smoking at free-standing bars, adult entertainment establishments and outdoor venues, including parks”.

This amendment would ban smoking in those places, playgrounds, entrances and exits to buildings, outdoor entertainment venues and outdoor service lines and would decreases the number of rooms a hotel can designate for smoking from 25 percent to 10 percent.

The amended ordinance has been submitted to the Board of Commissioners for their consideration and adoption.

NORTHEAST METRO – The University of Georgia’s football office is home to prominent figures, great history and much heart. Along with all of those things and a number of tireless staff members, it’s also home to former UGA football standout Bryant Gantt and his, almost innate, dedication to the community of UGA football and Athens.

Gantt, now a program coordinator and recruiting assistant at the school is one of the instrumental forces behind the team’s new mentorship program. Early last year, along with Gantt, Coach Van Halenger, Director of Athletics Greg McGarity and the Associate Athletic Director Carla Williams came together to create a program that paired current UGA football players with leaders in the Athens community for a “different type” of mentorship program. They aimed to connect the players with the Athens community.

The local effort helped to celebrate the national launch of DASANI PlantBottle® packaging – a 100 percent recyclable bottle made of up to 30 percent plants.

More than 1,000 Atlanta residents were “caught,” by the DASANI Blue Crew, being environmental do-gooders.
