5K walk aims to improve Latino health

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- The Hispanic Health Coalition of Georgia will host a 5K walk this weekend to promote healthy lifestyles among Latinos.

The event will be held Sunday, Apr. 7 at 8 a.m., with registration opening at 7 a.m. It will begin at Northeast Plaza Shopping Mall and end at Plaza Fiesta.

According to organizers, the walk's course runs alongside Buford Highway to help raises awareness of the countless immigrants whose only option to get to work is to walk beside the dangerous road.

Registration is free; there is also an option to donate $25. Learn more and sign up.

Northeast Plaza is located at 3307 Buford Highway in Brookhaven.

The Georgia Latino Health Report claims that there are more than 1,000,000 Latinos in Georgia, but many of them lack access to quality health care. Lations are also at a higher risk to develop cardiovascular diseases and obesity. Organizers hope Sunday's event will encourage local Latinos to exercise and get healthy.
