"I am pleased to see DeKalb County recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Day so that we can spread the word about this very serious problem," Boston said in a statement. "It's important that we stop the cycle of abuse that is often passed down from generation to generation."

Boston recently helped create a Special Victims Unit in DeKalb County. The police unit will investigate and prosecute domestic violence and stalking crimes.

The public is invited to attend a symposium and resource fair on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Manuel Maloof Auditorium in Decatur. Three domestic violence survivors are scheduled to speak during the event.

Attendees can bring old cell phones to Thursday's event and have them recycled through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program, which gives phones to victims of domestic violence. Verizon is co-sponsoring the symposium.

The Maloof Auditorium is located at 1300 Commerce Drive.
