WEEKEND EVENTS: National Public Gardens Day, kiln opening and Spring Fling

ATHENS, Ga. – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

To commemorate National Public Gardens Day, sponsored by the Rain Bird and American Public Gardens Association, nationwide gardens are offering free admission with a coupon printout, which can be found here. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, located in Athens, is accepting these coupons. The Garden is located about three miles south of the University. The address is 2450 South Milledge Avenue in Athens.

Visit Vines Garden in Loganville on Sunday May 7 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. for National Train Day at Vines Garden. This event is being presented by Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation. Engineers will be on hand holding information sessions on trains at the largest railroad in the Southeast.

ATLANTA -- Happy Friday! Celebrate the start of the weekend with a half-price however-you-want-it Frappuccino from Starbucks.

On May 6, participating Starbucks stores will hold the first Frappuccino Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. All flavors and sizes of the popular blended coffee drink are half-price during Happy Hour.

Starbucks is also bringing back two coconut drinks for summer.

The Mocha Coconut Frappuccino is a signature flavor in the chain's Hawaii stores.

LOCAL PROFILE: Fort Yargo State Park

WINDER, Ga. – Go outside and be a kid, again, at the Fort Yargo State Park. The park, which is located between the capitol city and the land-o-Bulldogs, is a popular among city dwellers who want to a getaway.  

This park was built for the outdoor enthusiast. Visitors can take advantage of the parks eighteen mile biking and hiking trails, the 260-acre lake and wooded disc golf course. The lake offers swimming, kayaking, fishing and boating; so there’s something for everyone.

The park also has a campground and three cottages that rent for $130, each. Those who wish to rent a boat may do so for a minimal fee and others can play miniature and dish golf for $4 and under. The facility also is home to two tennis courts.

Upcoming Events: On May 7, the park will host the Dirty Spokes Mountain Bike Race from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Learn about free college classes for seniors at the Doraville Library

DORAVILLE, Ga. -- Many seniors may not realize that they have plenty of opportunities to take free classes at local colleges.

On Thursday, May 12, Denise Rixter, an admissions counselor at Georgia Perimeter College (GPC), will present information about these classes to anyone who is at least 62 years old and loves to learn.

This "Prime Timers Program" lecture will take place at 11 a.m. at the Doraville Library (3748 Central Avenue, 30340).

Learn about the tuition-free classes that GPC offers to senior citizens. The subjects are varied and include music, art, theatre, foreign languages, astronomy and traditional academic topics.

NASA astronaut to visit DeKalb schools

NASA astronaut to visit DeKalb schools

DECATUR, Ga. -- Eric A. Boe, a NASA astronaut and Air Force Colonel, will visit a number of DeKalb County schools this week.

In addition, he will hold public sessions at Fernbank Science Center (156 Heaton Park Drive NE, Atlanta, 30307) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6.

DULUTH, Ga. – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

Suwanee Plein Air will hold their first Annual Plein Air Event on Friday, April 28, visitors are able to watch the artists at work. Some artists are eager to talk about their work while they are creating. Others are so engrossed that they may be unaware of any onlookers. Watching an artwork develop under the capable hand of an artist is a fascinating experience.

The Gwinnett Braves play Columbus on Friday night, April 29, at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. Tickets range from $6 to $16. The Atlanta Braves AAA affiliate, the Gwinnett Braves, plays baseball in their 10,000 seat state-of-the-art Coolray Field on Buford Drive in Lawrenceville.
