Interim Superintendant to hold DeKalb County's State of the System

DECATUR – (DeKalb County School System) DeKalb County School System’s Interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson will present the annual DeKalb Schools’ State of the System Address on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Holiday Inn – Atlanta Perimeter, 4386 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30341.

Mrs. Tyson will be discussing the state of DeKalb County School System as well as future plans for the School District.

Refreshments will be available at 7:30 a.m. The annual program and Mrs. Tyson’s address will begin at 8:00 a.m. The event is free but registration and an RSVP is mandatory. For more information and to register please visit: http://dekalbsos.eventbrite.com/.

Doraville Recognizes Maya Angelou, Celebrates Black History Month

DORAVILLE, GA -- February is Black History Month, and the City of Doraville is celebrating by paying tribute to notable African-Americans every day and weekend in February.

On Monday, Feb. 14, Doraville is honoring Maya Angelou.

Born Marguerite Ann Johnson on Apr. 4, 1928, Angelou has been called "America's most visible black female autobiographer" by scholar Joanne M. Braxton. She is best known for her series of six autobiographical novels that focus on her childhood and young adult years.

Angelou's first and most highly acclaimed volume, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, brought her international recognition and was nominated for the National Book Award.

Doraville Honors Late Mayor Ray Jenkins

DORAVILLE, GA -- The City of Doraville has lost a truly remarkable man, leader and pillar of the community.

On Monday, Feb. 7, city offices will be closed in honor and remembrance of Mayor Ray Jenkins, who passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 2 of complications from pneumonia. Mayor Jenkins had been battling the illness since late 2010.

The memorial service will be held Feb. 7 at 11:30 a.m. at H.M. Patterson & Son Funeral Home - Oglethorpe Hill Chapel (4550 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, 30319). The burial service will be at 2:30 p.m.
