DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A number of DeKalb County public schools fared very well on this year's College & Career Ready Performance Index.

The rankings, made public Monday, revealed that DeKalb Early College Academy is the highest performing high school in Georgia, and the DeKalb School of the Arts is among the state's top five high schools. DeKalb County School District is Georgia's only district to have two high schools in the top five.

Three DeKalb elementary schools -- Austin, Kittredge and Wadsworth -- are among Georgia's top 25 elementary schools, according to the index.

"We have planted the seeds for far more academic growth and achievement throughout our school system, and we expect for them to bear fruit in coming years in this and other critical measurements," DeKalb County superintendent Michael Thurmond said in a release.

"We are proud of students, parents, teachers and staff, and we're confident that our progress will continue," Thurmond added.

The CCRPI measures how schools are performing. It ranks schools on a scale of 1 to 100 and adds another 10 points to schools with students enrolled in high-level academic courses or with high performing students in certain areas, including special education, those learning English and in high poverty areas.

DeKalb Early College Academy is a Title I school, with 66 percent of students living in low-income families, according to DeKalb County School District spokesman Quinn Hudson.
