Dekalb Offering Spring Break Day Camps

DECATUR, Ga. -- (submitted by Dekalb County)  DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will hold Spring Break Day Camps April 4 - 8, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at all 12 recreation centers. Spring Break Day Camp is the hot spot for kids during the spring break. To embark on the total spring break camp experience, look no further than your local recreation center!

Spring Break Day Camp is a camp for ages 5 -12 and will be held Monday through Friday at a charge of $5 per day. Please make all payments payable by cashiers check or money order to the recreation center of your choice. Participants must provide their own lunch and snack.

DeKalb County student named runner-up in state spelling bee

DeKalb County student named runner-up in state spelling bee

ATLANTA -- Simola Nayak, a seventh grade student at Henderson Middle School, came in second in the 2011 Georgia Association of Educators State Spelling Bee on Friday, Mar. 18.

After four hours and 30 rounds of competition, Simola correctly spelled such words as "domiciliary," "obdurate" and "ineradicable" to clinch her status as runner-up.

Her prizes included a trophy, $500 in cash, a $50 Amazon gift card, a Webster Collegiate Dictionary and a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica.

Georgia's spelling bee champion, Julia Denniss, will represent the state for the third time at the national bee in early June.

DeKalb Board of Education Committee on Budget, Finance & Facilities to meet, March 22

DECATUR, Ga. -- (submitted by DeKalb Board of Education) The DeKalb Board of Education Committee on Budget, Finance & Facilities will hold a meeting on Tuesday, March 22 at 9:00am in the J. David Williamson Board Room at the DeKalb County School System's Administrative & Instructional Complex, 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, Stone Mountain.  The purpose of the meeting is to review Board policies and system-wide operations as it relates to the budget.

Georgia BOE approves math changes

ATLANTA -- The State Board of Education has approved a recommendation made by School Superintendent Dr. John D. Barge to allow four discrete math courses to be taught to certain students.

"We have many students who are currenty struggling with the integrated approach to the math curriculum," said Dr. Barge. "I applaud the State Board's action to approve my recommendation to give students more options to master our rigorous math standards."

The four new courses are:

* GPS Algebra
* GPS Geometry
* GPS Advanced Algebra
* GPS Pre-Calculus

In addition, the State Board also allowed the three Math Support classes to count as core classes instead of elective credits.

DECATUR – (DeKalb County School System) DeKalb County School System’s Interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson will present the annual DeKalb Schools’ State of the System Address on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Holiday Inn – Atlanta Perimeter, 4386 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30341.

Mrs. Tyson will be discussing the state of DeKalb County School System as well as future plans for the School District.

It's Not Too Late! DeKalb County Youth Council To Extend Application Deadline

Decatur -- Due to the January Winter Storm and the length of time that DeKalb County Schools and Georgia highways were closed, DeKalb County is extending the application deadline for their Youth Commission. The DeKalb County Youth Commission was approved in the March 2008 county budget. This program will cater to DeKalb County 10th and 11th graders. Students must be residents of DeKalb County and currently enrolled in a DeKalb County High School.

Last year, DeKalb County Commissioner Lee May launched the DeKalb County Youth Commission.
