ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Silverbacks have signed forward Reinaldo Navia for the 2012 season, the team announced Wednesday.

A native of Quillota, Chile, Navia comes to Atlanta after spending the 2011 season with Ñublense in his home country. Prior to that, he played with some of Latin America's most prestigious teams, including Club América in Mexico and LDU Quito in Ecuador.

"There is a reason why [Navia] has played with some of the biggest clubs in the world -- he is a tremendously skilled player," said Rodrigo Rios, director of soccer for the Silverbacks. "We're very excited that Reinaldo will be on our front line."

The 33-year-old Navia is also a former Olympian; he shot Chile into the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney by scoring the lone goal against Argentina in the finals of the South American qualifying tournament. The Chilean team went on to take home the bronze medal.

Navia is expected to join the team at its training camp in February. The Silverbacks' first 2012 game will be a home game against the San Antonio Scorpions on Saturday, Apr. 7.
