Look out for runners on Ga. 400

ATLANTA -- Don't be alarmed if you see a whole bunch of people running down Georgia 400 this weekend.

The Pay the Last Toll road race will be held Sunday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 a.m., and gives athletes one last opportunity to see the infamous toll booths before they are demolished.

Runners will begin at the Glenridge Connector in Sandy Springs and run south to Phipps Plaza. When they reach the toll booths, they will throw in their final 50 cents. All proceeds will go to charity.

Northbound lanes of Ga. 400 will be closed for the race from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews will also spend part of the weekend tearing down a MARTA pedestrian bridge on southbound Ga. 400.

Silverbacks coach named NASL Coach of the Year

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Silverbacks coach Brian Haynes has been named Coach of the Year by the North American Soccer League.

"I think all of us who have been associated with Brian Haynes for the course of the year are better people for it," Silverbacks technical director Eric Wynalda said. "Brian Haynes was just the right guy for the job, and everything I knew and had been told about him that seemingly made him a perfect fit was true."

Haynes has only been with the Silverbacks for one full season, but he led the team all the way to the NASL Soccer Bowl 2013, where it ultimately fell to the New York Cosmos.

As a player, Haynes was on a number of teams, including the Trinidad and Tobago national team. He was a three-time NAIA All American while attending Erskine College.

Haynes is the second NASL Coach of the Year winner. Tampa Bay Rowdies coach Ricky Hill received the inaugural award in 2012.

2013 Georgia Rides to the Capitol to raise cycling support

ATLANTA -- The 2013 "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event will be held through the city on Tuesday, March 26.

A spokeswoman for the ride said more than 1,000 cyclists are expected to participate, as part of the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association "GEORGIA BIKES!" program. The bike ride will be escorted by police, and run track through Decatur and Roswell. Leading the pack will be Commissioner Fred Boykin and Mayor Jere Wood, along with more city officials.

During the "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, cyclists hope to raise support for other types of transportation through the metro region. Plus, they hope conditions will improve to allow easier cycling, including the development of regional systems and both on-road bicycling facilities and multi-use trails.
