2013 Silverbacks schedule announced

ATLANTA -- North American Soccer League fans can now mark their calendars for the entire 2013 season. Just over a month after releasing its spring season schedule, the NASL announced the fall season schedule as it prepares to begin its first year under the new split-season competition format.

The NASL Fall Season will be highlighted by the New York Cosmos' return to the field. On August 3, the Cosmos will be officially reunited with the NASL when they play host to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, another team that competed in the original NASL back in the 1970's and 1980's.

"We're extremely excited to announce the fall schedule under our new format and await the return of one the greatest soccer legacies ever," said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson.

DORAVILLE, Ga. -- The Atlanta Silverback soccer club announced on Tuesday that Franklin McIntosh is taking over as the team's assistant coach.

As reported by Neal Malone, Public Relations Manager of the Silverbacks, McIntosh is from West Bromwich, England, and has been in Atlanta for 16 years. He began as a member of Atlanta Attack, and followed by directing and coaching some of the city's youth soccer teams. In recent years, McIntosh has scouted for the Silverbacks.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Silverbacks coaching staff," McIntosh said. "My goal is to do whatever I can to help Brian and help the club get to where they're supposed to be - at the top of the league."

After moving to the U.S. and gaining citizenship, said Malone, McIntosh represented the country in the 1996 Futsal World Cup in Spain and the 1997 World Cup Championship.

ATLANTA -- A former Atlanta Silverbacks star will spend the upcoming season playing for the Colorado Rapids.

Defender Chris Klute was loaned to the Rapids in September and performed so well that the Colorado soccer club opted to keep him for 2013.

The 22 year old helped lead the Rapids to a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo, which sealed his spot with the team, according to Silverbacks general manager Andy Smith.

"We're very happy for Chris because he is such a quality player and someone who deserves an opportunity to prove himself at the next level," Smith said in a statement. "It is a proud moment for the Silverbacks organization because he is a product of the commitment we're making to player development between our Reserves and our professional team."

Klute, a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, started the 2012 season with the Silverbacks Reserves and became part of the professional team last June.

ATLANTA -- The Silverbacks are still the Silverbacks. After running a Decision 2012 name change campaign, the soccer club's fans voted for the team to keep its identity.

"While the results ended up being very close, the fans have voted in favor of the Silverbacks," team general manager Andy Smith said in a statement. "That's really what this campaign was all about -- getting the community involved and giving them the power to choose the direction of our professional team."

"The fans are the ones that keep us going, so allowing them to take part in such a big decision was really important to us," Smith added.

The decision to keep the team name was announced Thursday at the Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Atlanta.
