ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Silverbacks have signed forward Reinaldo Navia for the 2012 season, the team announced Wednesday.

A native of Quillota, Chile, Navia comes to Atlanta after spending the 2011 season with Ñublense in his home country. Prior to that, he played with some of Latin America's most prestigious teams, including Club América in Mexico and LDU Quito in Ecuador.

"There is a reason why [Navia] has played with some of the biggest clubs in the world -- he is a tremendously skilled player," said Rodrigo Rios, director of soccer for the Silverbacks. "We're very excited that Reinaldo will be on our front line."

DORAVILLE, Ga. -- The Atlanta Silverbacks have "relieved" their head coach of duties.

Jose Manuel Abundis was let go after a disappointing 2011 season, according to a team statement. It was the Silverbacks' first season with the North American Soccer League. They ended it with a 4-20-4 record.

Assistant coach Alex Pineda Chacon has been promoted to head coach.

"Alex understands we have high expectations for him, and he is looking forward to getting to work, so he can produce results on the field right away," Silverbacks President Michael Oki said in a statement.

Chacon joined the coaching staff in 2007 after playing in Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and the United States.
